There are a lot of motifs within the film, “The Matrix.” Mirrors happen to be a very frequent visual motif within the film. The constant references have been linked to the Buddhist teaching of “polishing the mirror of the mind.” Once one polishes the mirror of his/her mind, enlightenment is reached and true understanding is achieved. One prominent reference to this Buddhist notion is the scene with the Buddhist boy and the spoon. Another reference would be when Neo’s body is covered in the mirror metallic substance it is a symbolic representation of rebirth into reality and understanding.
